The AYF seventh-grade Seahawks got back to their winning ways with a 24-0 victory over the Monroe Lions Sunday at Finn Stadium.
The Seahawks opened the scoring when quarterback David Wells hit Matt Keklik on the 37-yard fade pattern that would give the Hawks a lead that they would never lose. Joe Zoppi’s first of three extra-points would put Shelton ahead 8-0.
Shelton’s defense continued to shut down the Lions’ offense, as Monroe was held to only two first downs the whole game.
Playing key roles on the defense were Nate Miller (leading the team with eight tackles and a fumble recovery), Jon Sobotka, Mike Simons (four tackles each) and Keklic (three tackles).
In the second half, Justin Greene would find the end zone on a one-yard plunge and, after another Zoppi extra point, the Seahawks would extend the lead to 16-0.
Hard running by Tim Shiffer (11 carries for 49 yards) and a third Seahawk score by Porter Mckinnon behind the offense line of Carl Kopf, Matt Liscio, Robert Valeri, Dan Barone and Tre Genova would put an exclamation point on the victory.
