AYF Seahawks drub Danbury

The Shelton Seahawks fourth-grade football team traveled to Kaplanis Field in Danbury on Sunday to play a tough Danbury team and posted a 33-6 victory.

Shelton (4-1-1) started the scoring barrage with a touchdown run by Jarred Grinrod on Shelton’s first offensive possession.

Shelton’s offense moved the ball at will on Danbury’s defense, with Joey Dejesus, Jake Oddo, Tyler Pjatak and Caden Friedman all reaching the end zone for the Seahawks.

Also running the ball well were Keenan Lever and Jack Sweeney. Ryan Neary, Mike Finn and Anthony Casablanca gained plus yardage running the ball for the Seahawks, while also doing a stellar job on the offensive line.

Shelton’s defense dominated Danbury, holding it scoreless in the first half and allowing a single touchdown in the second half.

Antonio Baerga, Craig Ferris, Brian Carafiello, Ryan Hovhannissian, Kyle Corby, Jeremy Cyr, Chris Thompson, Jonathan Tobey, Rich Romanowski, Phil Sissick and Michael Lockavitch all gave great efforts defensively for the Seahawks.

Shelton now moves to second place in the fourth-grade division of the Colonial Conference. Shelton has a bye this week and will play Newtown at home on Oct. 15.

Eighth-grade Seahawks

The Shelton Seahawks eighth-grade football team evened its season record at 3-3 with a decisive win over the Danbury Vikings.

The Seahawks dominated both sides of the line of scrimmage with a collective team effort for the second week in a row, as six running backs ate up 200 yards rushing in the first half of play.

Quarterback Zach Tuskowski led the Seahawks on their first possession, handing off to Cal Motasky, who took the opening play 70 yards to paydirt and the Seahawks never looked back.

Tailback Jack Farrell added 50 tough yards on 10 carries and scored from eight yards out on Shelton’s second possession.

Journeymen running backs Alex Ramos and Greg Rogalin, along with Kyle Bulkley, added an extra one-two-three punch — picking up key first downs throughout the day.

Bulkley added a 20-yard catch from Tuskowski for the Seahawks third score of the day after he intercepted a Viking pass and returned it 30 yards.

Hunter Garrett had a beautiful 23-yard catch-and-run to keep the Viking secondary at bay throughout the day.

Tommy Sweeney scored the final touchdown of the half from 35 yards out on a quarterback option to lead the Seahawks into the break with a 28-0 lead.

Defensively, the Seahawks were at their finest behind the great play of Ryan Burke, who had a sack, a fumble recovery and an interception to stop the Viking attack at every level.

Defensive end Matt Zelanin captured two more sacks and also added two extra-point kicks.

Alexander Mills, Hunter Garrett, Mike Celentano and Ryan Rockwell kept a desperation Viking air attack in control throughout the second half, with Rockwell forcing and recovering a fumble early in the fourth quarter of play.

Team tackling was key in the first Seahawk road victory, led by linemen Nicholas LaPietra, Marc-Anthony Ortiz, Kyle Chirsky, Frank Mantero, Curtis DeLima and Rafael Desousa.

The Seahawks played Newtown at Shelton High on Sunday at noon.

Their final two regular-season games against front-runners Newtown and Norwalk will determine their path into the Colonial League playoff round.

Fifth-grade Seahawks

The fifth-grade Seahawks moved to 4-2 with a 18-0 win over Aspetuck.

Colin St. Pierre finished off the opening drive with a four-yard run to paydirt.

The Seahawks marched 64 yards on 10 plays with a mix of St. Pierre, Brian Berritto and Paul Ferrigno each carrying the ball.

Ferrigno made a touchdown-saving tackle on the last play of the first half to keep the Seahawks up 6-0.

Brian Berritto ripped off a 31-yard scoring run on the ’Hawks first possession of the second half to make the score 12-0.

Nick Andrade finished off the scoring with a 45-yard fumble return for a touchdown.

Andrade added three tackles and a interception on the day.

Colin Mengold led the defense with nine tackles, followed by Jack Carr and Jake Falanga with five tackles each. Jake Delima, Nick Motasky, Nick Pavone, Sean Rago, Sammy Chalk, Matt Dilieto, Jake Ferrigno, and Jordan Peck all chipped in defensively to shut down Aspetuck.

The Seahawks program will be hosting five games at Finn Stadium on Sunday, with the first game starting at 8 a.m. and the last at 4 p.m.
