Eddie “Corny” Cornwall will be honored with a testimonial dinner for his more than 60 years of unselfish contributions to the game of baseball as a coach, sponsor, scout and administrator on Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. at Testo’s Ristorante in Bridgeport.
The Greater Bridgeport Athletic Association and the Bridgeport Senior City League are sponsoring the event.
Charley Rich, founder of the Royals youth baseball and basketball teams in the late 1940s, before there were Little League programs, will be honored posthumously at the affair, with doors opening at 6 p.m.
Tickets are $35 and there will be a cash bar. No tickets will be sold at the door.
Cornwall coached his first team in 1952 at the age of 16. After a stint in the U.S. Army, he returned in 1959 to coach the Royals Pony and Colt teams.
Adding Legion, Connie Mack and Senior City teams to his resume, along with Twilight League squads, Cornwall kept churning out players.
From 1969-75, he was a scout for the Philadelphia Phillies and then the Cincinnati Reds until 1982.
Cornwall served as Senior City League president for 15 years and is currently a league advisor. All proceeds will be donated to Cornwall’s favorite charities and local sports organizations.
Checks can be made payable and sent to dinner chairman Mickey Buckmir at 125 Prayer Spring Road, Stratford, Conn. 06614. For more information, contact Buckmir at 203-375-5309.
