Scholarships available for high school seniors

Here is a listing of some scholarship opportunities offered to Shelton students.


Parkinson association scholarship

Connecticut Chapter of the American Parkinson Association is offering three scholarships to high school seniors who will be graduating in June 2012.

The scholarship is offered to a student who will be attending a four-year accredited college and has had the experience of living with a loved one who was or is affected with Parkinson's Disease; and how the students life has been affected. An essay will be required and sent to the chairperson of the scholarship committee. Deadline is March 31.

Weller Foundation scholarship

Full-time senior students from Shelton High School and surrounding communities may submit applications for this year's Vincent Voccia Vocational Award. The award will provide financial assistance to one student from each of the five high schools who has selected a vocational-technical career and will shortly enter vocational training.

Applications must be received by March 21 at their respective guidance department. A minimum of three qualified applications is necessary for each high school to select one award recipient. The award recipient will be announced on or about April 2. Students interested in applying for the Award can obtain full details and an application form from the school's guidance department.

AAUW offering scholarships to women

The Bridgeport Area Branch of AAUW (American Association of University Women) has announced that approximately $5,000 in scholarship money will be awarded this year to local women who have not received prior scholarship aid from AAUW.

Applicants must be a resident of any of the following towns for at least two years: Bridgeport, Easton, Fairfield, Monroe, Newtown, Shelton, Stratford and Trumbull. They must have completed at least 30 college credits by June 2012 and plan to continue their education for the school year 2012-13 in order to qualify. Applications may be downloaded at aauwbridgeport.org, under the link for education.

Summer scholarships available

The National Society for the Gifted and Talented is offering $10,000 in scholarships for Shelton area students to apply towards selected summer programs.

Ten scholarships are being offered by the NSGT Board of Trustees -— six at $1,000 each, six at $500 each and four at $250 each — and will be used by the student to help pay tuition for gifted summer program of their choice. The deadline for applications is April 1.

Each year, the award is given to outstanding students who demonstrate excelled ability in their field of interest. Students can download and complete the scholarship application at nsgt.org/scholarships.asp. Applications must be received by April 1; winners will be notified on April 15.

Dunkin' Donuts offers scholarships

Dunkin' Donuts Connecticut franchisees will award 50, $1,000 scholarships to qualified high school seniors in the state, as part of a Community Partnership program. This year the application process will be completely online at www.dunkindonuts.com/scholarship.

Qualified scholarship candidates must be high school seniors who plan to enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited two-year or four-year college, university or vocational-technical school for the entire upcoming academic year. In addition to being residents of the state of Connecticut, candidates must also have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or the equivalent). Full-time and part-time employees of Dunkin' Donuts franchisees who meet the above scholarship requirements are eligible and encouraged to apply.

Merit-based scholarships will be awarded to students who demonstrate a well-rounded character both in and out of the classroom. Such qualifications include a solid academic record, leadership roles and participation in school and community activities, academic honors, work experience, a statement of goals and aspirations, and unusual personal or family circumstances.

Dunkin' Donuts franchisees have partnered with Scholarship America to administer the scholarship program and selection process. The deadline date for all online applications is Thursday, March 15.

All applicants will be notified of their status via email by April 1. Scholarship winners will be recognized during an awards ceremony with the franchise owners and state dignitaries on July 10.
