Scouts’ work, damaged by car, will be repaired this spring

Stephen James Duhaime of Troop 101 Shelton and Matthew Taylor Tucker Troop 28 of Shelton.

Two Eagle Scouts who earned their rank by beautifying Huntington Congregational Church grounds will get back to work this spring to fix a church sign and plantings destroyed by an out-of-control driver recently.

Stephen James Duhaime of Troop 101 Shelton and Matthew Taylor Tucker Troop 28 of Shelton celebrated the completion of their Eagle Scout projects Dec. 3 at Huntington Congregational Church. Many family, friends, troop Scouts and dignitaries including Shelton Mayor Mark Lauretti, U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal, Jason Perillo State Representative 113 Assembly District, Ned Miller Housatonic Council President and Kevin Bishop Housatonic Council Scout Executive were at the "Eagle Court of Honor" ceremony. Just a month later, the church sign in front and planter were destroyed.

The sign damaged by a car accident will be repaired.Stephen, a junior at Shelton High School, tilled and cleared the area to create a garden along the parking area of the church, consisting of Hosta, Forstyhia, and Daffodils. He also made repairs and stained handicap access ramps both on the Reuman House and to Fellowship Hall.

Matthew's project included laying a Belgian Block garden wall, digging and laying electrical lines in preparation for spot lighting, and planting shrubbery around the already existing church sign. He also planted flowers, power washed and painted around the Reuman.

Both teens will work on reconstructing the sign and Belgian block planter in the spring.
