During the past year, our community of Shelton has seen some promising developments. While the nation's economy slowly improves, we must consider how the local economy stands to benefit from several important decisions on both public and private levels. I am certainly optimistic that Shelton may soon see improvements in the local economy and overall quality of life. In this week's column, I would like to highlight some of the reasons to be optimistic about our city's future, including increased economic development and improved opportunities for recreation.

I recently had the chance to take part in an informational forum focusing on federal programs that provide a wide array of services to seniors living in our state and around the country. It was an excellent opportunity to speak about the benefits of community-based care with some of our elected officials who represent us in Washington, D.C.
As Ranking Senator of the legislature's Aging Committee, I believe it is essential to improve these programs that enable seniors to stay in their homes and receive quality health care. At the event, we were joined by an impressive panel including U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal, Congressman Joe Courtney, Executive Director Judith Stein of the Center for Medicare Advocacy and Dawn Lambert of the state Department of Social Services among others.
State should fund Alzheimer’s care

Throughout our state and nation, Alzheimer's disease is an increasingly serious challenge for our seniors and the many families that care for them. As baby boomers continue to age, organizations have reported remarkable growth in the number of Alzheimer's cases that are projected to develop over the next decade. This will certainly add extra strain to our state's public health services that are currently at risk of being cut. Luckily, members of the legislature are dedicated to increasing future support to those who provide essential care for loved ones suffering from Alzheimer's.
As ranking senator of the General Assembly's Aging Committee, I am uniquely aware of the challenges posed by Alzheimer's for our seniors and families in our community. In order to be prepared, we must fully grasp the situation at hand.

As parents, we know the value of a good education for our children. Many of us play a direct role in the education of our children by joining a Parent-Teacher Association, serving on the Board of Education, or simply by reading to our children or helping with homework. Ultimately, we want to give our children the best tools to succeed in life. This means we must ensure that our children get the best education possible.

Last week I attended the opening day of the new legislative session at the Connecticut General Assembly.
Senators and representatives from every part of the state made the trip to Hartford to celebrate another opportunity to propose and support bills that could improve the lives of families throughout our state.
After the eventful day, I would like to share some of my thoughts with you. To say the least, it was an energizing and hopeful experience, and I am ready to get to work.
