Mary O’Shea McCarthy

Mary O’Shea McCarthy, 99, of the Black Rock section of Bridgeport, wife of the late James B. McCarthy, died Jan. 30, at home, with her family by her side.


Daughter of the late Cornelius and Catherine O’Shea, she was born April 22, 1912in Valencia Island, County, Kerry, Ireland.

Mrs. McCarthy emigrated from Ireland to the U.S. in 1930 and had since been a resident of Bridgeport. She was a communicant of St. Ann’s Church where she belonged to the Rosary Society and Prayer Group; and a member of The Ancient Order of Hibernians Ladies Aux.

She is survived by her children, Kathleen McCarthy Swanton of Colebrook, James B. (Elizabeth) McCarthy of Milford, Brendan C. (Kathleen) McCarthy of Bridgeport and Jerry F. (Patricia) McCarthy of Shelton; a brother, John (Dolores) Shea of Trumbull; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She also was predeceased by her daughter, Sr. Mary McCarthy, RSM and grandson, Christopher McCarthy, two brothers and four sisters.

Services are Saturday, Feb. 4, 9:30 a.m., St. Ann Church, 481 Brewster St., Bridgeport. Burial will follow in St. Michael Cemetery, Stratford. Visiting hours, Friday, Feb. 3, 4-8 p.m., Larson Funeral Home, 2496 North Ave., Bridgeport. Wakelee Memorial Funeral Home, Ansonia, handled arrangements.
